Search Appearance is one of the important settings in Yoast SEO. In this menu you can manage everything related to your on-page SEO, especially for content, knowledge graphs & schemas, rich snippets and RSS feeds for your site. The following is an explanation of the features in the Search Appearance setting:

  1. General – In this General tab you can set separators or separators for the title of your article when displayed on search engines – sections <title>. This feature is used to separate the title of the article with the site name in habit. If you change this setting, the separator in the <title>site title will change as a whole.
  2. Content Types – This setting makes it easy for you to be able to manage three types of content, namely Post and Pages. This setting also applies as a whole – bulk action . Here you can adjust whether or not you want your page indexed in search engine results, display dates in search results, activate Yoast SEO Meta Box on individual pages, set the title display and also set how content descriptions are displayed on search engines.

  5. Archives – Just like Taxonomies, Archives settings help you to be able to manage how the Author, Date Archives and Special Pages pages are displayed on search engine search pages.
  6. Breadcrumbs – The breadcrumbs feature is a superior feature of the Yoast SEO plugin. This feature helps to display the order and depth of your article directory from the homepage to the article page. This feature is part of structured data markup that helps search engines to display the location of articles in a blog. Breadcrumbs are also often referred to as secondary navigation which helps users to map the directory of a site.
  7. RSS – In this section you can manage all things related to RSS.

3.3 Search Console

Search Console settings are features that you can use to monitor errors and warnings from your site with the help of Google Search Console. This feature, of course, you must connect with your verified Webmaster account with the domain you are currently using.

This feature will make it easier for you to audit and monitor error and warning pages in Google’s search results and crawl results. Without having to log in to your Webmaster account, you can already find out which page url has errors and needs to be corrected.

3.4 Social

For Social settings, you can add information from your social media account details or the official account of your site.

  1. Accounts – Fill in all the details of the url / social media site or personal link. Supported social media are Facebook Page, Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube, Instagram, LinkedIn, MySpace and Wikipedia.

5. How to Setting Yoast SEO for Advanced

After giving a special way for setting Yoast SEO beginners with the help of wizaard configuration, then I will give you a way to set Yoast SEO WordPress to be continued. This setting does not require any coding skills, but there are some that require a rather complicated configuration.

5.1. Set the Search Appearance Feature

Search Appearance is a very important Yoast feature to manage. In this arrangement, you can manage everything related to your site’s structure and SEO settings.

There are many things you should know from this Search Appearance menu, including setting the overall title of the article, indexing images on search engines, managing the schema, managing SEO social media and many others. For more details, let’s read the explanation and how to adjust Yoast’s settings:

5.1.1. General

In the General tab you can set what will be the title and article / site title separator and the Knowledge Graph and Schema settings. Here are the details:

Title Separator

Title separator settings are Yoast settings that function to determine what symbols will be the separator between the site name and the article title when appearing on search engines. If you are not familiar with the title separator, consider the image below.

There are many choices that can be the title separator for your blog. Please choose what symbol will be the separator between your blog name and the title of your article in the search engine search display.

Title-SeparatorExample of separator selection

Tip : Choose a unique and suitable title separator for your blog, this will also be useful for increasing your blog’s CTR on search engines.

Knowledge Graph & Schema

The Knowledge Graph and Schema settings are also part of your site’s SEO. If confused, pay attention to the settings that we recommend below:

Person : Select Person if your site features individuals or personal blogs.

Organization : Select Organization if your site represents a company or company website.

5.1.2. Content Types

Content types is one of the on-page SEO features of Yoast. From here you can adjust whether your articles or site pages can be indexed by search engines or not, you can even set how your site will appear on search engines. This setting is one of the MANDATORY settings to adjust . Following are the recommended content types for Yoast:

This setting is your article page settings or inner page. See the following picture for setting our recommendations.

  • Show post in search result: Yes – Why? Because this is a setting whether your article page gets permission to be indexed or not. If you select No , then your article page will not appear on the search engine.
  • Date in Google Preview: Yes – The reason is you should display information when this article was created. Your post date will appear to the left of the article meta description. If you choose No , the date will not appear on the search page. However, choosing Yes or No will not affect your SEO.
  • Yoast SEO Meta Box: Yes – This setting is MUST be set to Yes , because all the basic on-page SEO settings from Yoast will be set by you through this meta box. Each of your posts or articles will have this meta box under the article editor. There is no reason to choose No .
  • SEO title – You don’t need anything to do here. The default settings are good. To better understand there are several parameters and variables that you should know about in the table below.
  • Meta description – There’s nothing you need to change, just leave the default settings Yoast. For parameters and variables you can see the variable SEO title above.
Variable Variable Function
%% sitename %% Website or website name
%% sitedesc %% Site description
%% title %% Article title or page title
%% tagline %% Site tagline
%% excerpt %% A short discussion of the article or site page
%% sep %% Separate character or symbol between the title and site name

For more complete variables, please review this Yoast snippet variable article .

The page

As with posts, you can also adjust the page settings through this setting. See page settings according to our recommendations in the following image.

  • Show page in search results: Yes – Option whether this page is allowed to be indexed by search engines or not. You should choose Yes.
  • Date in Google Preview: No – For pages, choosing No is the right option because the page is static or has not changed for a long period of time. So No is the right choice for date display on Google. Choosing the Yes option also doesn’t matter, it all depends on your taste and there is no relationship with SEO.
  • Yoast SEO Meta Box: Yes – For this option select Yes to bring up the Yoast meta box in each of your page editors.
  • SEO title – Nothing needs to be set in this section. Filling in with variables can be seen in the previous table
  • Meta description – There is nothing you need to change in this section. Leave with Yoast default settings only.

5.1.3. Media

The media is a settings page to avoid pages with little content (thin-content). The Media & attachment URLs command tells WordPress to redirect the image page to the image URL.

The point is that for every picture you upload, WordPress will create a special page that contains only images and image information. If this page is indexed by Google or other search engines, then this is not a good thing.

The effect of this on SEO is that your site contains many pages that are uninformed or not useful to site visitors. However, this setting also depends on the needs of your blog.

Example : If you are a photographer and want no special page for the image, these settings you made lawful to be No.

See the image below for the settings we recommend for Media:

5.1.4. Taxonomies

This setting is specifically for managing WordPress site categories and tags. The following is the recommendation for Yoast taxonomies.

For category settings, follow the image below.

  • Show category in search results: Yes – Our category recommends Yes for those of you who want to index your category pages on search engines. You can also change this setting to No if you don’t want to index the site category pages on search engines.
  • SEO title – Adjust according to your taste. If you selected No in the previous options, this setting does not need to be set anymore.
  • Meta description – Adjust to your taste.
  • Yoast SEO Meta Box – Leave with Default settings only and don’t need to be changed.

This setting is to set your site’s tag page on search engine search pages. Here are our recommendations for settings.Taxonomies-Tags

  • Show tag in search results: No – We recommend this setting to be No to avoid page duplication. Because many bloggers use tags that are not unique. However, if you understand and can set site tags then you can change this setting to Yes .
  • SEO title – Adjust according to your taste.
  • Meta description – Adjust according to your taste. You can leave it with the Default settings.
  • Yoast Meta Box – Leave with Default settings.

Category URLs

The unique Yoast SEO plugin is the feature URLs category. This feature can make your site category URLs become better and more professional. See pictures for further settings.

  • Remove the categories prefix: Remove – We recommend changing this setting to Remove and removing the word ‘category’ in each URL of your article category.

Examples of implementations between Keep and Remove:

  • Keep : https://techhow.org/category/seo/
  • Remove : https://techhow.org/seo/

In your opinion, which URL is better and more professional? The choice is according to your taste.

5.1.5. Archives

In the Archives settings section, you only need to set the Author section. See the picture below for more details.

Example of implementation :

  • Author archives: Yes – If you want search engines to display and index your author’s page.
  • Author archives: No – If you don’t want your author page to be indexed in search engines.

Breadcrumbs are one thing that MUST be on every page of your site. Why? This will make it easier for users and search engine crawler bots to know the depth of an article or page from the site.

Case in point :

You made an article on how to set Yoast SEO, then the breadcrumb of this page is Homepage> SEO> WordPress> How to set Yoast SEO. This means that the depth of this article is 4 because if the user opens the homepage the user must go through the SEO category and the WordPress category to be able to read the article.

There are not many settings on this page, see the picture below for recommendations from our settings.

  • Enable Breadcrumbs: Yes – Activate the breadcrumbs feature of Yoast. However, you have to add coding manually to be able to make breadcrumbs on every page of the site. How? Read in the section on how to install Yoast breadcrumbs.
  • Bold last page: Bold – If you choose Bold , the breadcrumb for that page will be bolded. So this will make it easier for users to know their location on the site. Selecting Regular will make breadcrumb like any other normal text.

5.1.7. RSS

For RSS settings, we recommend the Yoast only default settings or the Default settings . For those of you who don’t know what RSS is about? Please read in this reference .

However, if your blog is not English then you can adjust these settings according to your blog’s language. See pictures for how to set it according to our advice.RSS-Feed-Settings-Yoast

5.2. Social

Social Yoast settings are also important in our opinion. This will tell the search engine that your site has a social media account too. Of course this affects your SEO.

5.2.1. Accounts

Accounts Settings is a page where you can fill in all the URLs from social media sites . See pictures for more details.Akun-Sosial-Media-untuk-Schema

Social Media Site URL

5.2.2. Facebook

The Facebook tab is a setting for meta data from this social media. If you share your blog articles on Facebook, Facebook will display the data and information that you have set here.

Just select the Add Open Graph meta data option to Enabled . Other settings you don’t need to change here. Just follow the Default settings.

5.2.3. Twitter

As with Facebook settings, Add Twitter meta data card to leave it Enabled . To display articles on Twitter when you share, select the default card type to use to Summary with large image .

5.2.4. Pinterest

If your site has an Pinterest account or page, you can associate Pinterest with your site in this section. Fill in the Pinterest meta tag in the Pinterest confirmation section then Save changes.

With this, Pinterest will know that we are the rightful owner of this website and that your Pinterest account will display a blue check next to your site name. For example like the picture below.

The speed of a website is also one important factor for the good SEO of a website. WordPress users must carefully choose WordPress templates and themes that have good speed.

See our recommendations for some free WordPress templates that have great speed for the SEO factor of your site.

6.1.3. Slug

Slug is part of a URL. Yoast’s slug feature can be changed as you like. Of course the best slug is a slug that is not complicated and long.

Notice the example below:

If the title of your article is ‘ 5 Recipes & How to Cook Chickens That Drool ‘. Then the slug structure is like this:

  • Before optimization : https://namadomain.com/5-best-tips-How-to clear-cache-on-laptop/
  • After optimization : https://namadomain.com/best-tips-to-clear-cache-on-laptop/

In your opinion, which slug is more interesting?

6.1.4. Meta Description

The meta description in the SEO features section is a feature that helps you determine the meta description for each article. Like the title and slug, you can change this meta description to your liking.Meta-Description-dengan-Yoast-SEO-warna-Hijau

In writing a meta description, you should write the core of the article and try to make an interesting article description so that users are curious and enter your site. Using a good meta description will also increase the value of your CTR.

Here are 14 indicators that you should know to make the SEO Analysis Yoast indicator all green:

  • Keyphrase length – This indicator shows the number of words for the targeted keywords. Yoast provides a maximum number of words of 4 words, but since there is no Indonesian translation for the Yoast word function, you can target keywords as long as 6 words.
  • Keyphrase density – This indicator shows the comparison of the number of words and the number of keywords in the article. A good keyword density is in the range 0.5 – 3% . Tip : Don’t repeat keywords in large numbers.
  • Keyphrase in meta description – This indicator shows that you must mention keywords in the article’s meta description.
  • Meta description length – This indicator checks the length of characters in the meta description. This indicator will be green if the number of characters in your meta description is in the number 120 – 156 characters .
  • Previously used keyphrase – This indicator shows whether you have targeted this keyword or not. Tip : Don’t create two articles that target the same two keywords, because this will be considered a keyword cannibalization . If you don’t know this term, please read this reference article.
  • Keyphrase in subheading – This indicator will advise you to mention keywords in your sub headings, whether in H1, H2, H3, H4, H5 or H6.
  • Image alt attributes – This indicator will check whether the images in the article have alt attributes that contain keywords or not.
  • Text length – This indicator will show the number of words contained in the article being optimized.
  • Keyphrase in title – This indicator suggests entering keywords in the article title.
  • SEO title width – This indicator will calculate the length of the title for your SEO purposes or the title that appears on the search engine search page. A title that is too short or too long is not good for SEO titles (Recommendation: between 120 – 156 characters).
  • Keyphrase in slug – This indicator will check whether you have already mentioned keywords in the slug or not.

Tip : SEO analysis is just a tool that works based on algorithms. To produce good quality, high-quality content, always remember that the articles you write will be read by humans, not machines or robots.

Add related Keyphrase is a feature that you can use if you subscribe to Yoast Premium. This feature is a feature that can help you optimize 5 keywords at once in one article. Pretty interesting right?

For you Yoast Free users, you can only optimize one keyword for one article.

6.1.7. Cornerstone Content

Cornerstone content is a feature to determine whether the article will be a pillar / main article or just a supporting article. If you are optimizing an article for a pillar article for your site, then you should enable this feature for each pillar article to be optimized.

6.1.8. Advanced

In the Advanced section, you can set a number of things. The features in question are meta robots, search engine index options, breadcrumb titles and canonical urls. For setting recommendations, see the figure and points below.

  • Allow search engines to show this post in search results: Yes.
  • Should search engines follow links on this post: Yes or No – Select Yes if you want search engines to use external and internal links in the article. Select No if you want the search engines to ignore all the links in the article.
  • Meta robots advanced: Empty – Fill in this column if you want the crawler robot to treat things differently than habit, as we do not allow this article to enter the featured snippet so add meta nosnippet. For information on what robots meta you can use, see this page.
  • Breadcrumbs title: Fill in a short, concise and clear title – The breadcrumbs title box is an option to make the breadcrumb title different from the article title in the post. For example: If the title of the article ’15 How to Cook Delicious Chicken ‘then the title of a good breadcrumb should be’ How to Cook Chicken.
  • Canonical URL: Empty – Canonical URL is filled in to avoid duplicate content. Read more about Canonical URLs .

6.2. Readability

Readability is one of the features available in Yoast. This feature serves to check whether the article can be read or has a level that can be read by low users. Readability works by using a special algorithm Yoast.

The point of this sub-section is that if your blog uses Indonesian, this feature will not work on your site, because Yoast doesn’t support Indonesian. However, if your site uses languages supported by Yoast such as English, Spanish, Italian and others, this feature will really help you.

Tip : Write articles to read by humans.

6.3. Social

The last feature in the Yoast meta box is Social. Social is a place where you can optimize the appearance of your site when it is shared on Facebook and Twitter. By using this feature, you can change the cover photo, title and description of the article.

First we will discuss about sharing optimization articles to Facebook. Prepare a special image for the article cover that will be distributed to Facebook with a size of 1200 px and 630 px (width and height). For titles and descriptions, please write with a title that attracts Facebook users to enter your site.

For Twitter, prepare a sharing photo cover size of 1024 px and 512 px (width and height). As with Facebook, for the title and description make it as interesting as possible with the aim that Twitter users will read the article on your site.
